When the term slave trade is mentioned, what comes to the mind is the Trans-Atlantic slave trade that flourished between the 16th and 19th centuries where people from Africa were shipped to the Americas.
But there also existed a strong slave trade through the Coromandal coast and the ports of Pulicat and Nagapattinam. And Madras, which prided itself on having many firsts in Asia, was also notorious for it.
